Omaha Hi-Lo: General Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha/8 begins like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A round of betting ensues in which players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of betting ensues. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a few entrants often get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must utilize precisely three cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same notion in almost all poker games.

A low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem complex at the outset, following a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the base subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 provides an overwhelming range of wagering possibilities and because you have many individuals shooting for the high, along with several trying for the low hand. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
