Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he liked participating in various card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming very aggressive in these particular card games as he was competing against his dad. After finishing high school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little bit and headed to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were difficult as he would play countless hours and fail to win most times. He made some additional cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He believed he might better his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus attention even more on the game.
The actual advancement in his abilities began when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would regularly compete against each other. Howard was able to access a number of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would hone his strategic thinking abilities. Howard used these strategic ideas in the game of NL Texas Holdem.
Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was an excellent student of the game as she would always be asking questions about how to make the proper choice. He told Annie to head out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer headed to Sin City in 1993 and participated in money games for the successive 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
