Texas Hold em Poker : Semi-Bluffing and Defensive Wagering

Seems like most folks are always talking about pre-flop strategy, so I would like to talk a bit about how I wager on soon after the flop. Perhaps I can support others, or maybe they have advice to enhance my play.

I imagine that 2 of the most critical plays right after the flop are the semi-bluff and the defensive bet. That’s because these are the plays you make whenever you havent hit a hand except you might have a excellent drawing hand. Its easy to bet on a hand when you flop a monster. But I consider that these two are the best approaches to bet on a drawing. Each one is bet depending on you opponent(s) and your postion. So here’s how I wager on it, so tell me what you think.

Early Placement – Tight Opponents:

A semi-bluff works fairly nicely in this position. Arrive out gambling and if a tight player did not hit a hand he will probably lay down, and if he is unsure you might obtain a call. Except watch out, if that tight gambler comes back more than the best it might be time to have away.

Early Placement – Loose Opponents

That is were I like to try and do a defensive bet. Determine how quite a few chips you might be willing to risk on your draw and wager. This really is normally a much lower wager than normal. It’s been my understanding that the loose player will usually just call a wager instead of re-raise. Nonetheless, should you check to them, theyre far more likely to throw in additional chips than your willing to pay.

Late Position – Tight Opponents

This really is the best time to complete a semi-bluff, particularly if most of the table checks. If that is the case you will probaly pick up the pot now. If a gambler prior to has bet, you might have to make a decision if he has a hand or not. If not, then reraise and he’ll probably go away since he was trying to steal the pot. In the event you feel he does, effectively then it is time to determine your odds, and decide if the pot odds are worth the call.

Late Placement – Loose Opponents

This one can be a bit complicated, because it is harder to put a loose player on a hand. And if your in late place against loose gambler, chances are they’ve already wager. This is were I usually come to a decision to take a chance and appear back more than the top of them and pray they don’t call, and if they do, nicely then its time to wager. Odds are though even a loose gambler will go away in case you are available back strong enough.

Don’t forget though that these are moves I only generate immediately after the flop comes and I have a reasonable drawing hand (usually not a gutshot either). Perhaps four to the flush or the open ended straight, for instance.
