Omaha Hi-Lo: General Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha hi/lo begins like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting follows where players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. One more sequence of wagering happens. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of betting happens and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a few entrants can get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same notion in almost all poker games.

A low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem difficult initially, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an overwhelming assortment of betting choices and because you have numerous players battling for the high hand, as well as several battling for the low. If you prefer a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha hi/lo.
