Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha Hi-Lo starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. One more sequence of wagering ensues. After all the players have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The players will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many entrants can get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize exactly three cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same notion in nearly every poker game.
A low hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand takes the complete pot.
Although it seems complex at first, following a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of play simply enough. Since you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha Hi-Lo provides an exciting array of betting options and owing to the fact that you have several players shooting for the high hand, along with several shooting for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to play Omaha/8.
